What is Psyllium fiber ?

Psyllium or ispaghula is the common name used for several members of the plant genus Plantago whose seeds are used commercially for the production of mucilage. Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber to relieve symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhea, and occasionally as a food thickener.[1] Allergy to psyllium is common in workers frequently exposed to the substance.

Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from Psyllium seed husk, may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. One serving provides 2.4 grams of this soluble fiber.

How to take psyllium husk for constipation ?

Take psyllium at least 1 hour before or 2 to 4 hours after taking other medications. You should always take psyllium with a full 8 oz. glass of water, and you should drink at least 6 to 8 full glasses of water throughout the day to avoid constipation.

SideEffects of Psyllium Husk

People with bowel blockages or spasms, difficulties swallowing, or a constriction or obstruction elsewhere in the digestive tract should avoid psyllium. Psyllium supplements may be ineffective for those with renal illness or who are taking certain drugs. Psyllium should not be given to children unless their healthcare physician recommends it.
